چکیده

We describe progress in classifying the convective instability characteristics of the boundarylayer flow over the family of rotating cones. Existing experimental and theoretical studies are discussed which lead to the clear hypothesis of a centrifugal instability mode that dominates over slender cones and manifests as Görtler-type spiral vortices. Although a formulation consistent with the classic rotating-disk problem has been successful in predicting the stability characteristics over broad cones, it is unable to identify such a centrifugal mode as the half-angle is reduced. An alternative formulation is introduced and an asymptotic analysis summarized which identifies such a centrifugal mode.

Linear growth rates of types I and II convective modes within the rotating-cone boundary layer

Abstract Experimental observations have shown that the transition characteristics of the boundary-layer flow over rotating cones depends on the cone half-angle. In particular, pairs of counter-rotating Görtler-type vortices are observed over cones with slender half-angles and co-rotating vortices are observed over broad cones. Garrett et al (2009 J. Fluid Mech. 622 209–32) have hypothesized the...

The centrifugal instability of the boundary-layer flow over slender rotating cones

Existing experimental and theoretical studies are discussed which lead to the clear hypothesis of a hitherto unidentified convective instability mode that dominates within the boundary-layer flow over slender rotating cones. The mode manifests as Görtlertype counter-rotating spiral vortices, indicative of a centrifugal mechanism. Although a formulation consistent with the classic rotating-disk ...

Boundary Layers and Heat Transfer on a Rotating Rough Disk

The study of flow and heat transfer over rotating circular disks is of great practical importance in understanding the cooling of rotatory machinery such as turbines, electric motors and design and manufacturing of computer disk drives. This paper presents an analysis of the flow and heat transfer over a heated infinite permeable rough disk. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the elliptic Nav...

Boundary-layer transition on broad cones rotating in an imposed axial flow

We present stability analyses for the boundary-layer flow over broad cones (half-angle ψ > 40◦) rotating in imposed axial flows. Preliminary convective instability analyses are presented that are based on the Orr–Sommerfeld equation for a variety of axial-flow speeds. The results are discussed in terms of the limited existing experimental data and previous stability analyses on related bodies. ...

Centrifugal Instability over a Rotating Cone

In this study, we provide a mathematical description of the onset of counter-rotating circular vortices observed for a family of slender rotating cones (of half-angles 15◦, 30◦ and 45◦) in quiescent fluid. In particular, we apply appropriate scalings and apply a change of coordinates, accounting for the effects of streamline curvature. A combined large Reynolds number and large vortex wavenumbe...
